What this boat is
The Hatteras 86 Convertible is a large American sportfishing yacht that combines an enclosed flybridge, a dedicated fishing cockpit and accommodation for eight guests. Introduced in 1995, it suits owners seeking a crewed boat for offshore fishing and extended family cruising, with separate crew quarters and substantially more indoor living space than a conventional open-bridge convertible.
The model in detail
Built by Hatteras Yachts in North Carolina, the 86 Convertible joined the range in May 1995 under the 86C designation and FL hull-series code. Six examples were built. Closely related to the 82 Convertible, it belongs to the same large-convertible family as the 90, with increased cockpit length distinguishing the larger models. Its enclosed-flybridge profile combines sportfishing arrangements with three levels of accommodation and living space.
The yacht uses glass-reinforced plastic construction and a modified-V hull. Overall length is approximately 26.21 metres, with a beam around 6.53 metres; individual vessel particulars differ. The enclosed upper helm provides a sheltered operating position, while the main deck contains a large saloon, a substantial galley and a dining area. Customized interiors include examples finished in high-gloss cherry joinery.
The four-cabin guest arrangement accommodates eight people. It comprises a full-beam owner's suite, a VIP suite and two further guest cabins, including twin-berth arrangements on documented examples. Separate crew accommodation lies aft, with access from the cockpit; examples have two crew cabins. This separation allows the guest spaces to remain distinct from the working accommodation and service routes.
Engine installations changed during the model's life. An early example carries twin Detroit Diesel 16V92TA engines rated at 1,450 hp each, with approximately 19-knot cruising and a maximum around 22–23 knots. Later examples have twin 1,800 hp MTU 16V2000 diesels driving conventional shafts. These installations deliver approximately 18–20 knots cruising and up to 24 knots, although individual specifications also show lower speeds. Fuel capacity varies between documented boats, so endurance is not uniform across the fleet.
Fishing equipment is a central part of the design. The cockpit specification includes approximately 161 square feet of working space, a live-bait well, freezer storage, washdowns, tackle storage and fish boxes in the transom and cockpit sole. Outriggers and a fighting chair appear on equipped examples. The raised outdoor seating area provides a separate place for guests overlooking the fishing activity.
Electrical and domestic installations on documented boats include twin 35 kW Onan generators, air conditioning, a bow thruster, laundry equipment and extensive refrigeration. Stabilization and navigation equipment depend on the individual yacht and subsequent upgrades. Refits have included electronics replacement, air-conditioning overhaul, renewed upholstery and servicing of fishing hydraulics. The model is no longer in production, and differences in machinery, tankage, interior customization and refit history are important distinctions between surviving examples.

Frequent questions
The model is discontinued, and a verified original base price has not been established. One identifiable example is publicly advertised at €1,650,000; with only one confirmed unit, the observed low, high and median asking prices are identical.
Later examples with twin 1,800 hp MTU 16V2000 engines typically have stated cruising speeds of 18–20 knots and a maximum of 24 knots. A range of about 700 nautical miles is documented for an early Detroit Diesel-powered example, but this is not a fleet-wide endurance figure.
The guest accommodation comprises four cabins for eight people, including a full-beam owner's suite, a VIP cabin and two additional guest cabins. Separate crew accommodation is located aft.
Yes, it was designed as a crewed yacht, with separate aft crew accommodation and cockpit access. Documented examples have two crew cabins, but there is no single verified crew complement applicable to every boat.
