What this boat is

Fairline Targa 50 — 1

The Fairline Targa 50 GT combines an enclosed deck saloon, an opening hardtop and twin Volvo Penta IPS propulsion in a sportscruiser intended for family cruising and entertaining. The generation relevant to a 2021 boat belongs to Fairline’s renewed 50-foot range, announced in 2019, with alternative cabin and galley arrangements that accommodate different priorities for overnight guests and everyday living.

The model in detail

The Targa 50 GT relevant to the 2021 model year forms part of the 50-foot family Fairline announced in August 2019 alongside the Targa 50 Open and Squadron 50. Developed from the established 48-foot platform, this range received styling and specification changes from Fairline’s Design Studio, led by Wayne Huntley. It should not be confused with the earlier yacht carrying the same Targa 50 GT name.

The GT arrangement places an enclosed saloon beneath an electrically opening hardtop, with doors separating the interior from the aft cockpit. Buyers could specify the galley below or move it onto the main deck. Lower-deck plans provide either two cabins with an additional seating area or three cabins, the latter replacing that seating area with a bunk cabin. A separate single crew cabin was another option.

Accommodation centres on a full-beam owner’s cabin amidships, with its own bathroom and separate shower. The forward guest cabin has berths that can be arranged as singles or a double and direct access to the second bathroom. With the bunk cabin fitted, six guests can sleep in the main accommodation. These alternatives make the actual layout an important distinction between otherwise similar brokerage examples.

Fairline’s 2021 specification lists twin Volvo Penta IPS600 D6-440 engines, IPS650 D6-480 engines or IPS700 D8-550 engines, producing 440, 480 or 550 horsepower per engine respectively. That document quotes maximum speeds of 32–34 knots; other factory brochures give more conservative figures of approximately 30–32 knots. A later Aquaholic walkthrough reports cruising in the mid-20-knot region and an approximate 250-nautical-mile range, rather than a guaranteed endurance figure for every specification.

The GRP planing boat carries CE Category B approval. For this generation, Fairline’s published dimensions are 15.64 metres overall including the pulpit, a 4.32-metre beam and approximately 1.17 metres unloaded draught. The factory lists approximately 13,500 kilograms dry weight, 1,309 litres of fuel and 482 litres of fresh water. These figures identify the later IPS-powered platform and should not be mixed with specifications for the earlier namesake.

Equipment depended substantially on the original order. The launch-era Premium Pack included high-capacity air conditioning, an 11 kW Onan generator, a submersible bathing platform rated to lift 400 kilograms, a Sleipner bow thruster and a cockpit wet bar. IPS joystick controls assist close-quarters manoeuvring. The enclosed saloon and opening roof provide distinct sheltered and open-air modes, while the optional crew berth adds flexibility for owners travelling with assistance.
